Bolgheri & Supertuscan Wine Tasting Tour
Duration: 5 hours + time for lunch (extra)
Rates
Arianna & Friends invites you to discover the magical wine district of Bolgheri, famous worldwide for its excellent DOC wines, often called Supertuscans after decades of international success.
Set between rolling hills and the Tyrrhenian Sea, this beautiful area is home to small family-run wineries that produce elegant mineral white wines and outstanding red wines, including the prestigious Bolgheri Superiore.
For this experience, we carefully selected two of our favorite wineries in the Bolgheri area: one small, family-run estate and one located in the heart of the village. Both are far from the big, famous names and tell genuine, authentic stories, deeply connected to the land and its people.
A Land That Changed Its Destiny
In the famous wine district along the Tuscan coast, around the historic village of Bolgheri, winemaking is a relatively recent story. Most of these families were growing vegetables and fruit. Then, step by step, they changed direction and started producing high-quality wines.
Everything began with one visionary pioneer, who attracted the interest of important Tuscan winemakers, followed later by many small local farmers.
Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the nobleman who planted Bordeaux grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in Bolgheri area in the 1940s and created the first Sassicaia wine, a groundbreaking wine that eventually inspired the whole Super Tuscan movement.
Visit two representative wineries
The first winery we visit is part of an ancient castle located in the village, dating back to the 13th century. You will visit its impressive underground wine cellar, whose history goes back to the late 18th century. Here, you will taste three wines, two top selections and one entry-level wine, while learning about the long and fascinating history of this unique place.
The second winery is set in the countryside and offers a tasting of four wines that truly express the character of Bolgheri. Thanks to the local soils and the sea influence, international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah grow perfectly here, creating structured, elegant, and distinctive wines. You will meet Luigi, the winemaker, who will proudly guide you through his wines and share his passion and experience.
The Cypress Avenue of Bolgheri
Between the two winery visits, we will stop in the charming medieval village of Bolgheri. The town lies at the end of a stunning 5-km-long road lined with ancient cypress trees, one of the most iconic views in Tuscany. We will stop along the road for photos and then explore the village on foot in a self-guided visit. After stopping for photos along the cypress-lined road, you can explore the village on your own.
Bolgheri offers many nice options for a light lunch, a delicious gelato, or some small shopping before continuing to the second winery for more unforgettable wine tastings.
This is a list of specialties that you are likely to sample as part of the program of this tour. Please, note that the specialties of the tasting session and/or lunch may vary according to the season and the availability of the products in the day of the tour.
